Nationwide analysis of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta in civilian trauma
JAMA Mar 27, 2019
Joseph B, et al. - In this case-control study involving 420 patients, researchers assessed the outcomes in trauma patients after resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) placement. Data reported that in the REBOA group the mortality rate was higher than in the no-REBOA group. An association was found between placement of REBOA in severely injured trauma patients and a higher mortality rate vs a similar cohort of patients with no placement of REBOA. In addition, REBOA group patients experienced higher rates of acute kidney injury and lower amputations of the leg. A concerted effort is needed to define clearly when and in which REBOA patient population benefits.
