National variation in opioid prescribing and risk of prolonged use for opioid-naive patients treated in the Emergency Department for ankle sprains
Annals of Emergency Medicine Jul 27, 2018
Delgado MK, et al. - Researchers investigated the variation in Emergency Department (ED) opioid prescribing for a common minor injury, an ankle sprain, in order to inform opioid stewardship efforts. They also sought for the association between initial opioid prescription intensity and transition to prolonged opioid use. ED patients treated for ankle sprains commonly receive an opioid prescription but with high variability. Although infrequent in this population, higher rates of prolonged opioid use was observed in association with prescriptions greater than 225 morphine milligram equivalents. The finding seems valuable as these prescriptions could still fall within 5- or 7-day supply limit policies aimed at promoting safer opioid prescribing.
