National trends in stroke and TIA care in U.S. Emergency Departments and inpatient hospitalizations (2006–2014)
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Aug 16, 2018
Bedaiwi II, et al. - Recent trends in U.S. Emergency Department (ED) and hospital care for stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) were explored using national ED and inpatient data from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project 2006–14. Data revealed 3.9 million U.S. ED visits with stroke and 2.5 million with TIA from 2006 to 2014. Researchers identified no change in the average age of stroke & TIA patients in U.S. hospitals over this nine-year study period; however, there appeared a considerable increase in the proportion with Medicaid insurance. They noted an increase in stroke incidence while TIA incidence slightly decreased. For both conditions, they noted a decline in full inpatient hospitalizations, while transfers are on the rise. A dramatic increase in average inpatient costs for all three conditions was identified while there was a significant decline in mortality for stroke & intracranial hemorrhage.
