National prevalence of pain among children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders
JAMA Pediatrics Nov 09, 2019
Whitney DG, et al. - In this study, experts gave up-to-date national estimates of the prevalence of pain among children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). To the global morbidity and disability burden, pain is a principal contributor. Pediatric pain is primarily problematical, since it may prevent healthful development into and throughout adulthood. For children with ASD, pain is a profoundly understudied area, possibly owing to the misguided historical impact that children with ASD have lower pain sensitivity. Nevertheless, recent evidence contradicted this perspective and showed that pain could be involved in the pathogenesis of poor health outcomes in children with ASD.
