National landscape of unplanned 30-day readmissions in patients with left ventricular assist device implantation
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 18, 2018
Patel S, et al. - Researchers determined top causes of unplanned 30-day readmission in patients who underwent left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. Study subjects were identified using International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) code 37.66 from the healthcare cost and utilization project's (HCUP) National Readmission Database (NRD) as those who underwent the procedure from January 2013 to December 2013. Although an increased experience with LVADs was reported, unplanned readmissions within 30 days of implantation continued to be significantly high. The top 3 diagnoses for the first readmission were implant complications, congestive heart failure and gastrointestinal bleeding, and were responsible for more than a third of all readmissions. A prolonged LOS during the index admission, Medicare insurance, and discharge to short term facility were identified as significant predictors of readmissions.
