National inpatient sample database reveals pulmonary artery catheter use decreases outcomes but underused in women
The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation Apr 08, 2020
Oliveros E, , et al. - Researchers investigated the trends and outcomes in cardiogenic shock (CS) patients managed with pulmonary artery catheters (PAC). Using Healthcare Utilization Project Nationwide Inpatient Sample Database from 2009 through 2014 in the United States, they assessed a total of 104,455 patients having the diagnosis of CS during their index hospitalization in this retrospective analysis. Observations revealed an increase in the number of patients with CS from 2009 to 2014, and a decrease in the use of PAC. Less frequent use of PACs was observed in females than in males, despite a possible benefit of PACs with in-hospital mortality in CS.
