National analysis of 30‐day readmission following inpatient sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis
The Laryngoscope Oct 30, 2020
Khoury H, Bellamkonda N, Benharash P, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to describe the incidence, causes, risk factors, and costs of 30‐day readmission after inpatient functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) for patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. Among 6,386 individuals who had inpatient FESS, 742 (11.6%) were readmitted within 30 days of discharge. Independent predictors of 30‐day readmission were Medicaid insurance, several comorbidities, prolonged length of stay, postoperative neurologic complications, and lower hospital volume. Infection was the most common cause of readmission. Readmission after inpatient FESS is not rare. Preoperative comorbidities detection and management, optimized patient selection for inpatient surgery, and comprehensive postoperative discharge treatment can improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare spending.
