National 30-day readmission and prolonged length of stay after vestibular schwannoma surgery: Analysis of the Nationwide Readmissions Database
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Nov 21, 2019
Schwam ZG, et al. - Using Nationwide Readmissions Database (2013–2014), researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to analyze the risk factors for unanticipated readmission, prolonged index admission, and discharge to a facility after vestibular schwannoma surgery. Four thousand five hundred eighty-five cases have been identified. Data reported that the overall unanticipated readmission rate was 8.1%, and 9.1% had a prolonged length of stay (PLOS) of ≥ 7 days. “Other nervous system complications”, cerebrospinal fluid leak, “other postoperative infection”, and meningitis were included the most common readmission diagnoses. Unanticipated readmission and prolonged LOS after vestibular schwannoma surgery are common, with varying sociodemographic, hospital, and patient factors related to each. Additional studies are needed to explore targeted interventions to reduce readmission and prolonged LOS using the above-mentioned factors.
