Nasogastric decompression not associated with a reduction in surgery or bowel ischemia for acute small bowel obstruction

Berman DJ, et al. – An analysis was performed to ascertain if nasogastric decompression (NGD) was correlated with lower rates of surgery, bowel ischemia or length of stay. The clinicians revealed that NGD was not correlated with a reduction in the need for surgery or bowel resection but was associated with a 2–day increase in median LOS. Compared to men, women were more likely to receive surgery.
