NASH/liver fibrosis prevalence and incidence of non-liver comorbidities among people with NAFLD and incidence of NAFLD by metabolic comorbidites: lessons from South Korea
Digestive Diseases Feb 07, 2021
Park J, Lee EY, Li J, et al. - This study was intended to apply a meta-analytic approach to stage non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the Korean population. Researchers carried out a search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and KoreaMed from inception until June 29, 2019, and assessed pooled estimates via a random-effects model. For the analysis, 1,485 studies were screened and 191 eligible studies were examined: 179 (3,556,579 participants) for NAFLD prevalence and outcome analysis and 32 (1,089,785 participants) for NAFLD incidence analysis. The data exhibited that the overall prevalence of NAFLD was 31.46% with an incidence rate of 42.8 per 1000 person-years. It has been reported that 52% was NASH prevalence but significant fibrosis was seen in <15%. The outcome of this study indicated that the prevalence and incidence of non-liver comorbidities were high, particularly regarding cardiovascular disease incidence. In Korea, the burden of NAFLD is high. As per the findings, health policy efforts need to be directed towards reversing the course of NAFLD disease.
