Nasal bone fractures and the use of radiographic imaging: An otolaryngologist perspective
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Nov 21, 2019
Westfall E, Nelson B, Vernon D, et al. - Researchers designed an 8-question survey on isolated nasal bone fractures to determine radiologic preferences of practicing otolaryngologists regarding isolated nasal bone fractures. Surveys were sent for distribution among residents and faculty to all otolaryngology residency program directors. One hundred forty physicians responded to the survey. According to findings, otolaryngologists rarely ask for images to evaluate and treat isolated fractures in the nasal bone. When ordered, imaging is used more frequently among residents-in-training and non-otolaryngology consulting doctors. The research highlights an opportunity to educate primary care and emergency room practitioners as well as residents of otolaryngology on the importance of thorough physical examination in isolated nasal fractures over radiographic imaging. Moreover, the widespread adoption in this setting of a "no x-ray policy" may result in better use of resources.
