Naloxone use among Emergency Department patients with opioid overdose
The Journal of Emergency Medicine May 31, 2018
Marco CS, et al. - This prospective survey study, conducted at an urban level I trauma center, examined the experiences regarding naloxone use among Emergency Department (ED) patients with opioid overdose. Researchers noted a history of opioid overdose in many patients presenting with opioid overdose. A highly variable dose of naloxone was required for patients with opioid overdose. Higher doses of naloxone were provided in association with lower age. Only a minority of patients in this study reported access to naloxone despite the widespread availability of naloxone to consumers. Participants who had access to a naloxone kit reported no change in their frequency and dosage of opioid use.
