Naloxone dosing after opioid overdose in the era of illicitly manufactured fentanyl
Journal of Medical Toxicology Sep 11, 2019
Carpenter J, et al. - Researchers investigated how the naloxone dose, required to treat an opioid overdose, influence the finding of fentanyl, opiates, or both on urine drug screen (UDS). In this retrospective chart review, which was performed at a single emergency department and its affiliated emergency medical services agency, they reviewed 837 charts and included 121 individuals in the final analysis. As per findings, no increased doses of naloxone were required to successfully treat an overdose in correlation with high potency synthetic opioids like illicitly manufactured fentanyl. Opioid overdose patients with UDS evidence of exposure to fentanyl, opiates, or both did not require treatment with significantly different dose of naloxone.
