Myocardial infarction is associated with increased stroke severity, in‐hospital mortality, and complications: Insights from China Stroke Center Alliance Registries
Journal of the American Heart Association Oct 13, 2021
Duan H, Li Z, Gu HQ, et al. - An elevated risk of severe stroke, in‐hospital mortality, and complications was found in patients with ischemic stroke (IS) with a medical history of myocardial infarction (MI).
Data were obtained from the China Stroke Center Alliance database, and among 893,429 patients with IS, there were 81,646 (9.1%) patients with a history of MI (MI group).
Fully adjusted models showed higher risk of in‐hospital mortality in the MI group (odds ratio [OR], 1.74).
A higher risk of complications, including urinary tract infection (OR, 1.28), gastrointestinal bleeding (OR, 1.29), pneumonia (OR, 1.24), depression (OR, 1.33), seizure (OR, 1.35), atrial fibrillation (OR, 1.78), and cardiac or respiratory arrest (OR, 1.98), was found in the MI group patients.
The MI group, vs the group with IS without MI, also had a higher National Institute of Health Stroke Scale score post-onset and a higher proportion of severe strokes.
