Myocardial infarction after acute ischaemic stroke: Incidence, mortality and risk factors
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Sep 06, 2019
Pana TA, Wood AD, Mamas MA, et al. - In this observational study, researchers determined the risk factor profiles correlated with post-acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) myocardial infarction (MI) over long-term follow-up. Between January 2003 and December 2016, prospectively identified 9,840 AIS patients [mean age (SD) was 77.3 (12.2) years] admitted to a UK regional centre were included. Increasing blood glucose, total leucocyte count and C-reactive protein were factors linked to in-hospital MI. Between discharge and one-year follow-up, age, coronary heart disease, chronic kidney disease and cancers were connected with MI event. Over 1 to 5 years after discharge, age, diabetes, congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, hypertension and peripheral vascular disease were related to incident MI. Incident MI was connected with diabetes, hypertension, and peripheral vascular disease between 5 and 10 years after discharge. Data reported that the cumulative incidence of MI was 5.4% over 10 years. MI has been connected with enhanced danger of death during all follow-up periods. Overall, the authors concluded that poststroke MI prognosis is poor. This analysis highlighted a range of potential areas for focusing on preventive efforts.
