Myasthenia gravis as a prognostic marker in patients with thymoma
Journal of Thoracic Disease Jun 15, 2018
Cacho-Diaz B, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of a ten-year database of patients with thymoma treated at a single cancer referral hospital (National Institute of Cancer, Mexico City), researchers wanted to describe these patients and the differences between those with myasthenia gravis (MG) and those without it. They noted that 18 of 64 files from patients with thymoma showed the presence of MG. Ptosis, diplopia, appendicular weakness, dysphonia and dysphagia were the most frequently occurring symptoms in patients with MG. Positive acetylcholine receptor antibodies were detected in almost all the patients with MG. Overall, different clinical and autoimmune traits in MG manifestation were reported in patients with thymoma, but no survival differences were seen.
