Music-based interventions to reduce internalizing symptoms in children and adolescents: A meta-analysis
Journal of Affective Disorders | Sep 07, 2017
Geipel J, et al. Â Using a metaÂanalytical approach, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of musicÂbased interventions in reducing internalizing symptoms in children and adolescents. Results of this study suggested that musicÂbased interventions could be effective in decreasing the severity of internalizing symptoms in children and adolescents.
Methods
- Databases and journals were systematically screened for studies eligible for incorporation in meta-analysis on the impacts of music-based interventions in lessening internalizing symptoms.
- Using standardized mean differences (SMD), a random-effect meta-analysis was conducted.
Results
- 5 investigations were incorporated.
- Analysis of data from (randomized) controlled trials, yielded a significant main effect (Hedge's g = -0.73; 95%CI [-1.42;-0.04], Z = 2.08, p = .04, k = 5), demonstrating a more prominent decrease of internalizing symptoms in youth receiving music-based interventions (n = 100) compared to different control group interventions (n = 95).
