Muscle strength, physical performance, and metabolic changes after subtotal parathyroidectomy for secondary hyperparathyroidism
Surgery Nov 20, 2020
Jimeno-Fraile J, MD Higinio Cao, MD Juan Sancho-Insenser, et al. - Researchers conducted a prospective observational before-after assessment study of consecutive chronic hemodialysis patients referred for parathyroidectomy with the aim to determine the impact of subtotal parathyroidectomy for chronic hemodialysis on body composition, muscle strength, plasma proteins, quality of life, and long-term clinical course. In total, they assessed 23 chronic hemodialysis patients at baseline before parathyroidectomy and then at 1 and 6 months after surgery. Per outcomes, subtotal parathyroidectomy resulted in improvement in protein metabolic markers, muscle strength, and physical performance in these patients.
