Multisite HPV infections in the United States (NHANES 2003–2014): An overview and synthesis

Preventive Medicine Apr 10, 2019

Brouwer AF, et al. - By reanalyzing human papillomavirus (HPV) data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and using consistent populations and definitions across NHANES cycles, researchers assessed multisite HPV infections in the United States. Data were obtained from self-collected cervicovaginal swabs (women ages 18–59; 2003–2014), penile swabs (men ages 18–59: 2013–2014), and oral rinses (men and women ages 18–69; 2009–2014). According to findings, a decrease in cervicovaginal prevalence and increase in penile prevalence was noted with age, and oral prevalence appeared bimodal but with an earlier first peak in women. In vaccinated men and women (ages 18–24), reduced prevalence of vaccine genotypes (6, 11, 16, 18) was strongly evident at both genital and oral sites. These data point to the emergence of a more complete picture of HPV burden in the United States.
