Multiplex PCR reveals a high prevalence of multiple pathogens in traveller’s diarrhoea in children
Archives of Diseases in Childhood Jul 11, 2018
Pouletty M, et al. - The distribution of pathogens associated with traveler’s diarrhea (TD) in children was evaluated using a multiplex PCR assay on stool samples in this prospective study. From August 1 to 15 October during 2014 and 2015, all children admitted for TD in two university hospitals were involved. The sample consisted of 59 children. In children with TD, multiplex PCR on stools showed a high prevalence of diverse enteric pathogens and coinfections. Compared with conventional culture, major enteropathogenic bacteria were more frequently detected by multiplex PCR. The findings suggested that this technique helps start appropriate and early antibiotic treatment and seems to optimize the number of correctly treated patients.
