Multiple gastrointestinal stromal tumors: Analysis of clinicopathologic characteristics and prognosis of 20 patients
Cancer Management and Research Jul 30, 2019
Li K, et al. - In this investigation involving 20 patients (median age was 59 years), researchers studied the clinicopathologic features and prognosis of multiple gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Patients who had surgery for multiple GISTs were retrospectively analyzed between May 2003 and June 2018. Gastrointestinal bleeding was the most common presentation. Data reported that the rates of recurrence-free survival and overall survival at 5 years were 65.8% and 76.7%, respectively. According to findings, multiple GISTs may occur either as sporadic tumors or as an additional component of specific syndromes like the Carney triad and neurofibromatosis type 1. These GISTs show different clinicopathologic features based on their underlying mechanisms. The overall prognosis of multiple GIST patients is comparable to that of single GIST patients.
