Multiparity is associated with poorer cardiovascular health among women from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Jul 16, 2019
Ogunmoroti O, et al. - From the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, researchers examined 3,430 women (aged 45-84 years) who were free of clinical cardiovascular disease, for the correlation between parity and ideal cardiovascular health. They considered a total cardiovascular health score of 0-8 as inadequate, 9-10 as average, and 11-14 as optimal. Findings suggest a lower mean cardiovascular health score was seen with higher parity. A statistically significant association between parity and each Life’s Simple 7 metric was only evident for body mass index in the fully adjusted models. Ideal body mass index was less prevalent among women with ≥5 live births. The test for interaction conferred no influence of race/ethnicity on the association between parity and cardiovascular health. Multiparity was associated with poorer cardiovascular health.
