Multimorbidity in antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody–associated vasculitis: Results from a longitudinal, multicenter data linkage study
Arthritis & Rheumatology Mar 12, 2021
Sarica SH, Gallacher PJ, Dhaun N, et al. - Researchers analyzed temporal trends in multimorbidity as well as excess health care costs related to multimorbidities in a national antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody–associated vasculitis (AAV) cohort from Scotland. They matched 543 patients with AAV (median age 58.7 years; 53.6% men) and 2,672 general population controls (median age 58.7 years; 53.7% men) and observed them for a median of 5.1 years. A greater probability of experiencing individual morbidities at all time points, but specifically < 2 years post-diagnosis, was observed in AAV patients. Following 10 years, multimorbidity was present in 37.0% of AAV patients and 17.3% of controls. Multimorbidity was found to be related to disproportionate increments in health care costs in AAV patients. Overall, these data not only highlight that holistic care holds importance in AAV cases but also may identify a potentially critical opportunity to consider early screening.
