Multimodality assessment of right ventricular strain in patients with acute pulmonary embolism
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 02, 2018
Carroll BJ, et al. - Optimal risk stratification is essential to manage patients with an acute pulmonary embolism (PE) at greatest risk for adverse outcomes. Researchers retrospectively compared the following modalities of evaluation of right ventricular (RV) strain with respect to adverse events: computed tomography (CT), transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), electrocardiography (ECG), and troponin levels in consecutive hospitalized patients with acute PE. It was noted that the presence of RV strain on all three modalities (ECG, CT, and TTE) was the only scenario when the risk of adverse events was found to be elevated in patients with an acute PE. In the discrimination of high-risk patients, troponin further helped. Multimodality assessment of RV strain was identified as a superior approach to risk assessment.
