Multilevel percutaneous kyphoplasty in painful osteolytic vertebral metastases: A study of the efficacy and safety
Journal of Pain Research Mar 29, 2019
Shi G, et al. - The data from 176 patients who received percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) for painful osteolytic spinal metastases were retrospectively analyzed in order to assess the safety and efficacy of multilevel (>3) PKP for painful osteolytic vertebral metastases. PKP at a maximum of three vertebral levels per procedure was done in group A (n=104), while PKP at more than three levels during one operation was done in group B (n=72). Outcomes support the safety and efficacy of multilevel PKP in achieving pain relief and improving spinal mobility and general health (GH) in these patients. However, they observed slightly worse short-term pain relief (less than 1 week postoperatively) and improvement of GH in the long-term (more than 3 months postoperatively) among patients who undergo PKP at more than three levels compared with patients who undergo PKP at less than three levels.
