Multicentre study found that adherence to national antibiotic recommendations for neonatal early‐onset sepsis was low
Acta Pediatrica Feb 21, 2021
van der Weijden BM, Achten NB, Bekhof J, et al. - Researchers conducted a multicenter, prospective observational cross‐sectional study in seven hospitals in the Netherlands, with the aim to determine the adherence to the Dutch neonatal early‐onset sepsis (EOS) guidelines, adapted from UK guidance. In addition, they investigated the effect on antibiotic recommendations and duration. Antibiotic treatment was recommended for 438/1,024 (42.8%) of the neonates designated at risk by the Dutch guidelines, but there were only 186/438 (42.5%) who received antibiotics. As there was low adherence to the Dutch guidelines, a majority of neonates were not provided the recommended antibiotic treatment, while some antibiotic use was prolonged despite negative blood cultures. Based on findings, they suggest the necessity to revise the guidelines.
