Multicentre randomized clinical trial of colonic J pouch or straight stapled colorectal reconstruction after low anterior resection for rectal cancer
British Journal of Surgery Jun 30, 2019
Pucciarelli S, et al. - Researchers performed this randomized trial to determine whether colonic J pouch reconstruction vs straight colorectal anastomosis following anterior resection for rectal cancer reduces the incidence of anastomotic leakage. Rectal carcinoma patients who underwent low anterior resection followed by colorectal anastomosis were randomly assigned to receive a colonic J pouch or straight colorectal anastomosis. Colonic J pouch arm had 190 evaluable patients and straight colorectal arm included 189 evaluable patients. Outcomes suggest no reduction in the incidence of anastomotic leakage and postoperative complications after colonic J pouch reconstruction when compared with conventional straight colorectal anastomosis.
