Multicentre prospective observational study evaluating recommendations for mastectomy by multidisciplinary teams
British Journal of Surgery Nov 14, 2019
Singh JK, et al. - Researchers performed a multicentre prospective observational study in order to illustrate current practice in multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) decision-making for recommending mastectomy. In addition, they sought for factors contributing to variation in mastectomy rates. They assessed 1,776 women with breast cancer who underwent 1,823 mastectomies at 68 units across the UK. MDTs advised a mastectomy for 1402 (76·9%) of these lesions. Most mastectomies are advised for large tumor to breast size ratio. However, in patients with large ER+ or HER2+ cancers, they observed an inconsistency in the use of neoadjuvant systemic treatment (NST) to downsize tumors. Findings suggest that the number of mastectomies advised by MDTs could be reduced in correlation to the application of standardized recommendations for NST.
