Multicenter study of the treatment of appendicitis in America: Acute, perforated, and gangrenous (MUSTANG), an EAST multicenter study
Annals of Surgery Feb 12, 2021
Yeh DD, Eid AI, Young KA, et al. - Researchers conducted a multicenter prospective observational study enrolling adults with appendicitis with the aim to report on contemporary presentation, treatment, and outcomes of patients presenting with acute (A), perforated (P), and gangrenous (G) appendicitis in the United States. Enrollment of a total of 3,597 individuals was performed across 28 sites (median age: 37 (27–52) years). Findings suggest that patients presenting with appendicitis in the United States, in majority, receive CT imaging, undergo laparoscopic appendectomy, and stay in the hospital for 1 day. Appendectomy was required within 30 days in one in five patients selected for initial non-operative management. In-hospital delay to appendectomy is not identified to be a risk factor for “complicated” appendicitis.
