Multicenter comparison of non-supine vs supine positioning during intubation in the emergency department: A National Emergency Airway Registry (NEAR) study
Academic Emergency Medicine May 28, 2019
Stoecklein HH, et al. - Researchers compared supine (SP) and non-supine (NSP) positioning for emergency department (ED) patients undergoing orotracheal intubation regarding first-pass success, adverse events, and glottic view. From 25 participating centers in the NEAR, prospectively collected data for ED intubations over a two-year period were retrospectively analyzed. They identified 11,480 total intubations; of these, 5.8% were performed in NSP indicating utilization of SP in most ED intubations by ED providers. However, in patients who were obese or in whom a difficult airway was predicted, providers more likely used NSP. The groups showed no differences in first-pass success but in NSP, a higher likelihood of total adverse events was noted.
