Multi-centre prospective study on diagnosing subtypes of lung cancer by exhaled-breath analysis
Lung Cancer Oct 04, 2018
Kort S, et al. - Given that exhaled-breath analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) might detect lung cancer early in the course of the disease, researchers performed this prospective, multi-center study to examine subtypes of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), like adenocarcinoma (AC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and analyze patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). They had 144 subjects diagnosed with NSCLC and 146 healthy subjects, including those considered negative for NSCLC after investigation, breathe into the Aeonose™ (The eNose Company, Zutphen, Netherlands). Results of this study suggested that the Aeonose™ is a non-invasive diagnostic method that can exclude lung cancer because of its high negative predictive value for various, but not all types of lung cancer. Patients showing positive breath tests should still have further diagnostic testing.
