MRI prognosticators for adverse maternal and neonatal clinical outcome in patients at high risk for placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorders

Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Jan 04, 2019

Bourgioti C, et al. - In this prospective study, researchers identified MRI risk factors for poor peripartum outcome in gravid patients at risk for placenta accreta spectrum (PAS). Study participants included 100 gravid women (mean age: 34.9 years) at third trimester, with placenta previa. The MRI score was not significant for the prediction of adverse neonatal events, including preterm delivery, low birthweight, and 5-minute Apgar score. The MRI score demonstrated a significant predictive ability for each adverse maternal event. It was noted that the presence of ≥3 MRI signs was the cutoff point for a complicated delivery. For massive bleeding, hysterectomy, or extensive bladder repair, ≥ 6 MRI signs was the cutoff point. In high-risk patients for PAS, preoperative identification of specific MRI features might forecast peripartum course.
