MRI findings of central nervous system involvement in children with haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis: Correlation with clinical biochemical tests
Clinical Radiology Oct 09, 2020
Ma W, Li XJ, Xiao L, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to examine the brain MRI features of children with haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) with central nervous system (CNS) involvement and to explore the correlation with clinical biochemical tests. Between January 2012 and June 2019, clinical and MRI data were obtained from 118 children with HLH-CNS. Patients were classified into three categories, including normal appearance (Group 1, 17/118), diffuse parenchymal volume loss (Group 2, 44/118), and brain parenchyma lesions (Group 3, 57/118) comprising three subtypes of brain lesions and complications of HLH-CNS. Comparing biochemical values among the three groups showed a significant difference for all values, except for cell counts in the CSF. The classification of HLH-CNS brain MRI findings correlates well with the findings of a variety of key biochemical tests. Brain MRI is a promising tool for elucidating the severity of the illness and clinical effects.
