MR imaging of pubic symphysis after uncomplicated vaginal delivery and planned caesarean delivery in the first postpartum week
Clinical Imaging Mar 26, 2019
Agten CA, et al. - In this investigation, researchers compared changes in pubic symphysis within the first week of the postpartum between women with vaginal delivery and women with caesarean sections. After approval of the institutional review board, 30 healthy women were prospectively examined three days after delivery with MRI. Two musculoskeletal radiologists compared 17 women with vaginal delivery and 13 women with caesarean delivery. They evaluated bone marrow edema (location and extent), fluid in the joint gap, joint space width and stress fractures. Investigators found that pubic bone marrow edema occurs in 3 out of 4 women unrelated to the delivery mode during the first postpartum week. Pubic bone marrow edema is most likely a result of mechanical stress during pregnancy after the planned delivery of caesarean.
