MR imaging features of orbital Langerhans cell histiocytosis
BMC Ophthalmology Dec 26, 2019
Wu C, et al. - Researchers performed a retrospective review of clinical demonstrations and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of 23 patients with histopathology-confirmed Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) of the orbit in order to determine MRI features of this disease condition, to ultimately better diagnostic accuracy. In this study involving 18 male patients (78%), five (22%) female patients, all with mean age at presentation of 6.3 years, swollen eyelids, exophthalmos, and a palpable mass were found as common manifestations. The 12 out of 23 (52.2%) cases seemed heterogeneous isointense and iso-hypointense on T1-weighted imaging was seen in 10 out of 23 (43.5%) cases. On T2-weighted imaging, hyper-hypointense mixed signals were seen in 15 out of 23 (65.2%) cases. Following enhancement, marked enhancement at the edges and the surrounding tissues, and heterogeneous obvious enhancement of the lesion center were seen for 21 out of 23 (91.3%) cases lesions. Many characteristic MRI features capable of offering important information for clinicians and helpful in enhancing understanding as well as the diagnostic accuracy of the orbital LCH were revealed in this study.
