Motocross vs motorcycle injury patterns: A retrospective National Trauma Databank analysis
The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Aug 02, 2019
Fierro N, Inaba K, Aiolfi K, et al. - Using the National Trauma Databank (NTDB), researchers sought to characterize the epidemiology, injury patterns, and outcomes of motocross collisions. Further, they compared these parameters with motorcycle collisions for context. They retrieved data of 5,774,836 NTDB patients; of these, 141,529 were involved in motocross or motorcycle collisions (31,252 motocross and 110,277 motorcycle). The analysis revealed distinct mechanisms of injury between motocross and motorcycle collisions. Motocross riders are younger, more likely to wear protective devices, and less likely to use alcohol. Motocross collisions vs motorcycle collisions are associated with better outcomes. Improved survival was observed in correlation to wearing a helmet for all riders.
