Most transfers from urgent care centers to Emergency Departments are discharged and many are unnecessary

Zitek T, et al. - This study was performed to determine the fraction of transfers from an Urgent care center (UCC) to an Emergency Department (ED) that were unnecessary. Researchers also assessed the frequency with which these patients were discharged from the ED. In addition, they investigated the groups of patients who were most likely to be unnecessarily transferred were investigated. They noted discharge of most patients transferred to their ED from a UCC, and many of these transfers were unnecessary, especially those involving pediatric patients. These transfers may represent an economic burden to the society.
