Mortality risk within 14 days after coronavirus disease 2019 diagnosis in dementia patients: A nationwide analysis

Kim YJ, Jee Y, Park S, et al. - The increased risk of mortality within 14 days of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) diagnosis was evaluated in dementia patients.
Researchers used the COVID-19 patients’ database from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency to conduct this retrospective study from February to April 2020.
Among 5,349 COVID-19 patients retrieved from the database, dementia was present in 224 as comorbidity.
The mortality rate within 14 days after COVID-19 diagnosis in dementia patients and the controls was 23.7% vs 9.2%, respectively, after propensity score matching.
Overall, risk of early death within 14 days appeared higher among COVID-19 patients with dementia, highlighting the necessity of prompt intervention for dementia patients after COVID-19 diagnosis.
