Mortality risk reductions for replacing sedentary time with physical activities
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Mar 27, 2019
Rees-Punia E, et al. - A total of 37,924 males and 54,617 females in the Cancer Prevention Study-II Nutrition Cohort were studied to assess the relationship between the decline in mortality risk and replacement of 30minutes/day sitting for an equivalent duration of light or moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). They noted an association of replacement of 30minutes/day sitting with light physical activity with a 14% mortality risk reduction among the least active candidates (≤17minutes/day MVPA). An association between replacement with MVPA and a 45% mortality risk reduction was also noted. They also found similar correlations among moderately active individuals (light physical activity replacement, hazard ratio=0.94, 95% CI=0.91, 0.97; MVPA replacement, hazard ratio=0.83, 95% CI=0.76, 0.88).
