Mortality of women with ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast: A population-based study from the Girona province, Spain (1994–2013)
Clinical and Translational Oncology Dec 13, 2018
Roca-Barceló A, et al. - In order to comprehensively define the incidence and mortality trends of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in the Girona province, Spain (1994–2013) and to determine the all-cause mortality excess risk of diagnosed women, researchers estimated age-standardized rates of DCIS between 1994 and 2013, and calculated standard mortality ratios (SMR) and absolute excess mortality overall and by tumor and patient characteristics. Death of 56 patients was reported among the 641 women included (follow-up time: 8.4 person-years). Women aged 50–69 years old displayed significantly increased DCIS incidence but with decreased mortality. Overall, women diagnosed with DCIS showed similar all-cause mortality risk to that of the general population, except women diagnosed before age 50 and those with subsequent invasive breast cancer, who showed a significantly increased risk. This emphasizes considering differential management for these patients.
