Mortality of patients with uveal melanoma detected by diabetic retinopathy screening
Retina Nov 15, 2020
Hussain R, Czanner G, Taktak A, et al. - This study was attempted to assess if early detection and treatment of uveal melanoma by screening were associated with a lower mortality rate. Researchers carried out a retrospective assessment of prospectively collected data comparing 132 patients with uveal melanoma referred by the National Diabetic Screening Service with 608 control patients referred through other means. The results of this study demonstrate that, despite higher rates of comorbidities, the patients detected at the diabetic screening had a lower 5-year mortality rate. At an earlier stage, the diabetic screening programme enabled the detection and treatment of posterior uveal melanomas. Nevertheless, the confounding factors of lead and length time bias are not to be ignored.
