Mortality of cardiovascular events in COPD patients with preceding hospitalized acute exacerbation
Chest Mar 21, 2020
Wang M, et al. - Given deterioration of cardiovascular comorbidities may be seen along with acute exacerbation (AE) of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), so, researchers investigated if preceding AE may be related to mortality of cardiovascular events. They selected patients with COPD who encountered first-time acute myocardial infarction (AMI; n = 26,442), ischemic stroke (n = 54,959) and intracranial hemorrhage (ICH; n = 14,893) over a 13-year span, from a health insurance research database in Taiwan. They found preceding hospitalized AE was related to 90-day and overall mortality of cardiovascular events in COPD. Significant trends at higher risk of 90-day and overall mortality of AMI, ischemic stroke and ICH were observed among patients with more frequent hospitalized AEs vs controls. These observations were identified to be consistent with propensity score matching-based estimates.
