Mortality in patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Rheumatology Apr 24, 2021
Huang H, Xie W, Geng Y, et al. - Researchers investigated the magnitude of all-cause mortality risk in patients suffering from primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) relative to the general population. Pubmed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library were explored to identify relevant studies. They found 2796 articles, of which 14 studies with 14,584 patients were eligible for inclusion. Based on existing data, pSS patients were found to have ∼50% increase of mortality vs the general population. The observed risk of mortality was significantly greater among patients with older age, male gender, vasculitis, interstitial lung disease, low complements, positive anti-La/SSB and cryoglobulinemia. Patients with poor prognostic factors deserve more attention.
