Mortality in patients with permanent hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy
British Journal of Surgery Jul 18, 2018
Almquist M, et al. - The mortality in patients with permanent hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy was investigated via linking data from the Scandinavian Quality Register for Thyroid, Parathyroid and Adrenal Surgery with the Swedish National Prescription Register for Pharmaceuticals and the Swedish National Inpatient Register. Researchers recognized 4899 patients with a mean age of 46·3(15·8) years; 83·1% women; 2932 patients (59·8%) with thyrotoxicosis. Findings revealed an increased risk of death in association with permanent hypoparathyroidism which is commonly encountered following total thyroidectomy for benign disease.
