Mortality in infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia: Data from cardiac catheterization

Pediatric Pulmonology Apr 15, 2019

Steurer MA, et al. - In this single-center, retrospective cohort study, researchers described the hemodynamics of former preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and pulmonary hypertension (PH), as measured at cardiac catheterization, and identified respiratory and cardiovascular predictors of mortality. The study sample consisted of 30 patients born at less than 32-weeks gestational age (GA), who had an oxygen requirement at a postmenstrual age of 36 weeks and underwent cardiac catheterization between July 2014 and December 2017. Investigators found that the severity of lung disease in cardiac catheterization as assessed by impaired oxygenation was not correlated with mortality. The presence of pulmonary vein stenosis on cardiac catheterization was the only factor significantly related to mortality, although pulmonary vascular resistance might also be an important factor.
