Mortality due to cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and cancer in adults with cerebral palsy
Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology Feb 11, 2019
Ryan JM, et al. - Using data from adults with cerebral palsy (CP) in England, researchers conducted a cohort study to compare mortality rates between adults with CP and the general population for cardiovascular disease, cancer and respiratory disease. According to International Classification of Diseases codes, the cause of death was categorized. For a total of 7693 person-years, 958 adults with CP were identified and followed. In England, adults with CP have a 14-fold increased risk of death from respiratory disease and a 3-fold increase in the risk of death from the circulatory system. There was no evidence that the risk of death from cancer was increased. There was evidence that there was an increased risk of cerebrovascular disease when considering specific circulatory diseases. However, the increased risk of ischaemic heart disease did not reach the 5% level of statistical significance.
