Mortality and major neonatal morbidity in preterm infants with serious congenital heart disease
The Journal of Pediatrics Aug 31, 2021
Steurer MA, Baer RJ, Chambers CD, et al. - A reduction in mortality of preterm neonates with serious congenital heart disease (CHD) has been observed over the last decade, and an increase in major neonatal morbidity was evident. Specialized and focused medical neonatal care is definitely required in preterm neonates with serious CHD.
This cohort study involved 1921 preterm infants with serious CHD.
A reduction in the relative risk (RR) of death by 10.6% was reported for each year (RR 0.89) of the study period.
An increase in the RR of major neonatal morbidity by 8.3% was noted for each year (RR 1.08, 95% CI 1.02-1.15).
The highest mortality or morbidity was observed in preterm infants with a gestational age of 28-32 weeks vs their peers without CHD.
