Mortality and implant survival with simultaneous and staged bilateral total hip arthroplasty: Experience from the Australian Orthopedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry
Journal of Arthroplasty May 19, 2020
Calabro L, Yong M, Whitehouse SL, et al. - Using data from the Australian Orthopedic National Joint Replacement Registry rates, researchers compared causes of revision, and 30-day mortality between simultaneous and staged bilateral THA. From September, 1999 to December, 2017, collection of data for 12,359 bilateral THA procedures was done. Per findings, bilateral THA has a low mortality rate regardless of time interval between procedures. Rates of revision were similar with simultaneous and staged bilateral THA. Fracture, loosening, and infection were the most common reasons for revision. A significantly higher rate of revision for fracture was observed in correlation with simultaneous bilateral procedures vs staging 3-6 months.
