Mortality and clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia treated with non-invasive respiratory support: A rapid review
Journal of Critical Care May 27, 2021
Radovanovic D, Coppola S, Franceschi E, et al. - In order to assess the efficacy and safety of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in treating acute respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19 pneumonia, researchers herein analyzed mortality and intubation rates in COVID-19 patients treated with NIV/CPAP. Applying rapid review methodology, they included 23 manuscripts (4,776 patients, 66% males, 46% with hypertension) in this work. Among 4,776 patients, 46% received CPAP/NIV, mortality was 41% and 26% were intubated. Patients treated with NIV had higher mortality (35%) relative to those received CPAP (22%). Wide use of NIV and CPAP was recorded in patients with COVID-19, but there appeared high mortality.
