Mortality and cardiovascular disease burden of uncontrolled diabetes in a registry-based cohort: The ESCARVAL-RISK study
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Sep 12, 2018
Navarro-Perez J, et al. - Although the link between diabetes, mortality and cardiovascular disease has been supported by epidemiological evidence, researchers assessed population attributable risk (PAR) related to glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular hospitalization. They prospectively examined a total of 19,140 men and women aged 30 years or older with diabetes mellitus using electronic health records from the universal public health system in the Valencian Community, Spain 2008–2012. Findings demonstrated that a considerable mortality and cardiovascular disease burden was seen in relation to uncontrolled glucose levels in this large general-practice cohort of patients with diabetes. Data showed that the PAR related to uncontrolled diabetes was 13.6% for all-cause mortality, 17.9% for coronary heart disease and 2.7% for stroke hospitalization.
